CBYA Compete in the Trofeo Virgin de Carmen

Real Club Náutico Calpe (RCNC) hosted their Trofeo Virgin de Carmen TOM 28 regatta on Saturday 17th July 2021.

This is organised for members of the RCNC to compete against each other, on the TOMs, in several windward- leeward races. The CBYA were also invited to participate.

We entered one yacht, and four others were crewed by RCNC management committee, RCNC members and RCNC staff.

Conditions were just enough to have five good races, with a 6/8 knot SE wind.

We participated in five races, each lasting 20-25 minutes.

The CBYA team was skipper Rachel Garnham, with Dave Reid, Fernando Moneta and Amanda Topson as crew.

During the five races we had a few issues, which included being protested against on the start line, so we had to do a 360 penalty. We also lost the spinnaker halyard partially up the mast, which was eventually recovered. Pero no pasa nada!

CBYA results were 3 x 5th, 1 x 4th and 1 x 2nd. We were fifth overall.

It is very difficult competing against Spanish sailors who have raced in Calpe Bay for most of their lives, and are half our age! However, we did well, enjoyed ourselves, and had some success.

Although we were not to climb onto the winner’s podium, we still took the opportunity for a photo call, and enjoyed some celebratory refreshments!!

Many thanks to Antonio, and RCNC, for organising the event.

Dave Reid
