Sail Training on the TOMs

The CBYA runs regular sail training sessions on the TOM sailing yachts owned by Real Club Náutico Calpe.

These usually take place every week on Thursdays and Saturdays, in the absence of any other special events.

All crew have to be paid-up CBYA members, and need to purchase a Licensia Federativa before sailing. This includes insurance cover for all sailing events throughout the European Union. Prices for 2022 will soon be uploaded to our website.

These events are provided in order to:

  1. Introduce new members to the TOMs
  2. Provide sail training for beginners
  3. Improve sailing skills for the more experienced sailors

We ran a typical TOMs sail training event, in great sailing conditions, on Saturday 12th March, with Hugh Epsom (skipper), Ernst Kaars-Sijpesteijn, Alan Bailey, and new member, Carol Beecher. The latter is an American from Newport, Rhode Island, who already has experience in sailing and racing yachts. Both Ernst & Alan also have extensive experience in sailing small and large boats, and Alan is one of our key helpers in the Dinghy Section.

The training session included:

  • Safety briefing (including use of a CBYA handheld marine VHF radio)
  • Rigging
  • Leaving the marina
  • Tacking & gybing
  • Heaving to
  • Flying the spinnaker
  • Returning to the marina
  • De-rigging

Normally all crew members have the opportunity to helm, and take a turn on different crew positions.

We later retired to our normal post-sailing venue for drinks and lunch.

Another fun day out on the water with the CBYA!
