A Great Turn Out for the 9th April TOMs Winter Series Ladder

On Saturday, April 9th, a bright and sunny morning at the Club Nautico in Calpe, a group of 18 CBYA members, ranging from experienced TOMs skippers to enthusiastic beginners, met for another 2021/2022 WINTER TOMs LADDER Series race day. Always exciting, these keel boat racing events are never the same twice and fresh crews are drawn each day. It’s a great opportunity to gain sailing experience, benefit from informal hands-on training sessions, and interact with a fantastic group of dedicated sailing afficionados. This time 4 boats competed, and 3 races were sailed with varying results. Despite a few minor dramas re-entering the harbour, everyone enjoyed themselves and all were happy to be out on the water again after a rainy and cold March.

The crews were:

TOM#1: Hugh Epsom (skipper), Paddy Bettesworth, Tessa Kloosterboer, Berrie Gerrits.

TOM#2: Dave Reid (skipper), Cristina Richardson, Malcolm Reeve, Karen Gardner.

TOM#3: Chris de Boer (skipper), Alan Bailey, John Mackney, Paul Smithard.

TOM#4: Barry McCrae (skipper), Amanda Topson, Tammy de Boer, Monique Neyzen.

The results after three closely contested races:

TOM#1 – 5 points

TOM#4 – 5 points

TOM#3 – 10 points

TOM#4 – 11 points

Note: TOM#3 was DSQ in race 2 for being in the zone within one minute before the start. WSRRS Para 30.3 – U Flag Rule.

We all retired to Dracula’s Restaurant after the event to wish Dave Reid farewell, as he has decided to move back to Edinburgh next month.

Our TOMs Co-ordinator, Amanda, arranged a presentation comprising a sailing trophy and a nice bottle of vino.

Dave promises to return for a few months each year in the future, so we won’t be able to get rid of him that easily!

Well done to all!

Tessa Kloosterboer
