Sailing tragedy off the coast of Denia -

AN EXPERIENCED sailor and team coach lost his life during the easterly storm that hit the coast on Wednesday. 52-year-old Don Nordqvist, coaching Swedish teams in the Europe and Laser classes, was sailing in the company of another supervisor, examining the course in a Zodiac sailing craft.

At 1.30pm strong gusts of wind recorded at 70kph capsized the boat. Nordqvist’s 30-year-old female companion managed to catch a lifeline thrown from the jetty but Nordqvist drowned before a Coastguard helicopter could reach him. His body was recovered 20 metres from the breakwater rocks south of Denia port.
Neither sailor was wearing a lifejacket.
